How to Install a Spin-In Take-Off on Ductwork

How do you install a spin-in take-off?

Trace the spin-in on the duct, punch a starter hole with the pointy end of your hammer, and cut about a quarter inch inside your line with snips. Straddle the open slot over the cutout and rotate clockwise a full turn. Cut on the line instead of inside it and the hole is too big.

Spin-in, tabbed take-off, or HET?

A spin-in or a tabbed take-off is what you will normally see coming off commercial rectangular duct. That is the standard in most specs.

Round duct uses a different style of take-off, but it will still have a tab on it.

A high efficiency take-off is the upsell. Same job, better airflow, more money and more time to install. If your spec calls for HET’s somebody made an efficiency decision on paper. If it does not, you are cutting in spin-ins or tabbed take-offs.

Sizing is not your call either way. It should be on the drawings, or the unit is sized for the CFM and the system gets balanced afterward.

Cutting the correct face

If the duct is on the ground and you are cutting take-offs into it, this is the step that will cost you a piece of duct.

Mock the duct up in the exact position it is going to hang. Not close — exact. Then work out where the take-off actually lands, and mark that face.

The trouble comes with duct that is close to square. A 12×14 looks the same from more than one angle, and there is no visual cue to catch you. You will get one wrong at some point and have to redo the cut.

Mock it in position. Every time.

On the ground or in the air?

Here is the honest version, and it is not what you would guess.

Cutting take-offs into duct while it is still on the ground is the more advanced move — you have to be confident enough in your layout to know exactly where every branch lands before anything is hung.

It is also the safer one, because you are standing on the floor instead of a ladder.

If you are not confident in your layout yet, hang the trunk first and cut the take-offs after. Better to get it right on a ladder than to redo a piece of duct you cut on the ground.

The confidence comes with reps. The layout skill is what you are actually building.

Tracing and cutting

Press the spin-in against the duct face and trace around it with a permanent marker. Pencils and pens do not work on duct.

Set the spin-in aside.

Take your hammer and puncture a hole somewhere inside the circle to give your snips a place to start.

Now cut. Stay about a quarter inch inside the black line. Not on it. Inside it.

If you cut the line, the hole is too big and the spin-in has nothing to grab.

When the hole comes out too big

I will be honest with you: I was never great at cutting in spin-ins. I used the strap fix plenty of times.

Here is how it works. Take a piece of hanger strap and slip it into the slot on the spin-in, then screw the strap down to the face of the duct. That gives the spin-in something to bite that it lost when you took the hole too far.

Sometimes one strap on one side is enough. Sometimes it takes two in a two thirds position. Look at what is loose and put the strap where it is loose.

Then mastic it, and expect a couple of coats. A repaired hole leaks more than a clean one and the seal is doing more work.

It is a real fix and it holds. It is also more time and more material than cutting it right, which is the whole argument for the quarter inch.

Spinning it in

Position the spin-in over the hole so the open slot straddles the cut edge of the metal.

Then rotate it clockwise. Keep going through a full 360 degrees, so the slot travels all the way around and captures the edge the whole way.

That is the entire mechanism. The slot rides over the cut edge and locks the fitting to the duct face.

Setting the damper so somebody can balance it

The damper is four pieces: the body with the threaded rod, the lever, a flat washer, and a wing nut.

The rod coming out of the damper is flattened on the top and the bottom, and those flats are keyed to the damper blade inside the duct. The lever has an oval slot on one end that fits over those flats.

That is what makes the whole thing work. Once the lever is seated on the flats, the lever is reporting the position of a blade nobody can see.

Then tighten the wing nut. If it is loose the blade can drift over time, and a mark that no longer tells the truth is worse than no mark at all.

Somebody is going to balance this system later. Everything they do at this take-off depends on that lever being right.

If the trunk is insulated

Same as a HET. Cut the metal, then cut the insulation with a duct board knife, then seal the cut insulation with duct seal mastic.

The reason is the same too. The edge of that insulation comes coated so the fibers stay put. Cut through it and the fibers in that thickness are sitting exposed in moving air.

Not every trunk is insulated. If the duct is running through the same space it is conditioning it usually is not wrapped — think exposed ceilings with the trunk and branch lines mounted up at joist level. That is usually round duct anyway.

Check what the design calls for rather than assuming either way.
